Blog Post Prompt #2

Which criminal/official court case (please list the official docket/title for the case will be the focus of your research project (identify the criminal by his/her full name and also please list the official docket #/title for the case, if applicable)? Which unofficial account of this trial will you be examining (identify the writer (if applicable) and title of the work you will be analyzing)? What factors influenced your decision to examine, say, Hawley Crippen rather than Catherine Wilson, and, for example, ? (In considering your answers to these questions, you may wish to consider factors such as your interest in both a given criminal/case and the available unofficial accounts; how much time you have to spend on this project given other academic, professional and/or familial responsibilities; your experience level in doing research and/or working through materials on your own, etc.).

  3. CATHERINE WILSON: MURDER OF MARIA SOAMES (I plan to change my title)

    Surname: Constance Wilson
    Alias: Catherine Taylor
    Research Level: Intermediate
Time Invested: 1 hour a day

The work I will be analyzing is one article from capitalpunichmentuk.org called " Catherine Wilson, the last woman to suffer in public outside Newgate" and another article from murderpedia.org called "Catherine Wilson". I chose this crime because our first names share the same meaning and our last names are similar but that wasn't just it. As soon as I opened the pdf you referred, boom, as clear as day, my birthday, SOLD.

  4. I will research the life of the notorious English thief Jack Sheppard (1702-1724). There is no official docket number but the Old Bailey reference number is t17241204-47.

The unofficial account of this trial I will be examining is The Chronicles of Crime; The New Newgate Calendar. A series of Memoirs and Anecdotes of Notorious Characters. John Sheppard: Executed for House-breaking.

I chose to do my research project on Jack Sheppard because I wanted to investigate a non-violent criminal who was a master in his trade, in this case thievery, who was known for making great escapes such as Houdini. Secondly, I wanted to research a case that is well documented and has a lot of secondary online resources.

  5. I will research AMELIA ELIZABETH DYER (57) for the wilful murder of Doris Marmon. I originally set out to find an interesting case from the Leytonstone area of East London, where I used to reside for several years. I didn't find anything of great interest, and then proceeded to the list that's on the project handout. For some reason Dyer caught my attention, and I typed in her name on the Old Bailey website. What I found is highly interesting, and so I settled on this case:
    Reference Number: t18960518-451
I have looked into Dyer on Google, and there is quite a bit of information pertinent to her notorious killings, for instance here: http://www.prisonersofeternity.co.uk/amelia-dyer-baby-farming-and-murder/
I decided to research Dyer because 'baby farming' as it was known in the Victorian age let to the killing spree of Dyer. It definitely sounds more like a crime many of us would associate with the 20th or 21st centuries, rather than the 19th century.
At this point I do not know how much time I will be able to allot to this research project as I have to work on other projects for other classes as well, but I will do my best to come up with a satisfying and resourceful result. - Jozef Loderer

  6. I will be working on the case of
Hawley Harvey Crippen. Reference Number: t19101011-74
CRIPPEN, Hawley Harvey (48, dentist) was indicted for and charged on coroner's inquisition with the willful murder of Cora Crippen, otherwise Belle Elmore.
I chose this case as it seems to be a recent case compare to the others and more information will be available and easy to read.
Through my reading, I want to be able to understand how he was convicted, how the crime was committed and how the trial went about

  7. My official court case is about a murder that happened on May 5, 1967 by George Gadesby. EBBA ID: 31714, University of Glaslow Library – Euing 223, ESTC ID: R180795 and Reference number t16970519-27.

The unofficial account I will be using is The Murtherer Justly Condemned (the facsimile transmission with text transcription) which was published by Packington Pound in 1697. I was interested in this criminal case because I am fascinated with the era the murder happened in and the language the publication used. I am looking forward to the result of the crime (a man stabs his wife in the belly and dies) and what the verdict was then as opposed to now.

  8. I will research William Godfrey Youngman for the wilful murder of Mary Wells Streeter. Reference number t18600813-723. I would like to say that I put a lot of effort into my selection, however I did not, I used the Minnie-minie-moe approach, to my surprise it was a murder. I have not found enough time to thoroughly go through the case yet, I will. It was a stretch just being able to blog my selection. I know I will have a hard time completing this project with My work and Family schedule. I know this is a requirement of the class and it's all the motivation I need to find whatever time necessary to complete the project. I'm so short of time that doing a comparison between the crimes and the criminals are not an option.

  10. Reference Number: t17600521-16
NUMBER VI. PART II. for the YEAR 1760.
Being the Fifth SESSIONS in the MAYORALTY of The Right Honble Sir Thomas CHITTY , Knt. LORD-MAYOR of the CITY of LONDON.

Although lengthy, I will be working on a case involving Samuel Willson , merchant , was indicted, for that he having in his custody a certain forged bond, with the name John Lawson thereunto subscribed, purporting to be from himself and John Lawson to Thomas Fogg , dated Nov. 29, 1758 penalized of 1200 l. for the payment of 600 l.
I chose this case so that I can get an understanding of how the justice worked once upon a time and how such a lengthy case concluded with a verdict of Not Guilty.

  11. I have chosen to research William Godfrey Youngman: Murder of Mary Wells Streeter. Reference # t18600813-723 Trial August 13, 1860.

The unofficial Arthur Conan Doyle's " The Holocaust of Manor Place"

After doing some additional research (google) it appears there is more to this story than the murder of Mary Wells Streeter. Youngman is accused of murdering several family members including his mother. His reason, was self defense. He stated that upon arriving to the home he shared with his family and Mary (his Sweetheart) one day, he found them murdered. He struggled with his mother and says he may have killed her in self defense. This case seems very interesting as it appears to be a crime of passion.

  12. The criminal official court case is "The Murtherer Justly Condemned" that is the case that I will be working on and that is the case that will be the focus of my research project. The criminal in question is George Gadesby and the official docket number is t16970519-27. There is no writer. I see no author's name but that the standard tune is "Packington's Pound.
The factors that influenced my decision is the reality of me having a passion to work on cases of murder and the intrigue of dealing working and researching the matter. My major is Law and Paralegal and I have completed legal research one and two and dealt with working on Lexis Nexis to find cases, read them and do a fact pattern on them by analyzing, holding etc.
Through research on Ebba-ID:31714 I learned that he was a butcher of Shoreditch, and that he was found guilty at the sessions-house in the Old Baily, for the barbarous bloody murder of his wife by stabbing her in the belly, in leaden-hall market on the 5th of May 1697. Of which wound she immediately died, also some account of his penitent behavior in Newgate.

  13. I will be researching the case of Mary young (Jenny driver ) the old bay reference # is 17410116-15 the case is about a young women who is a street thief and scammer. The case just seem very interesting to me . It the only one that stood out to me. I can't say how much time I can spend on this project base on the fact I am a full time student and work full time and have a child and travel an hour an half to school each direction .however I will try my best

  14. I will be researching the case of George Victor Townley (1838-12 Feb. 1865)

    Criminal: George Victor Townley

Crime: Murder of Elizabeth (Bessie) Goodwin

Old Bailey Database & Official Docket#/title: There is none but trial took place in 1863

Unofficial Works I will be using: (1) John Hitchman's Interview with George Victor Townley, and Reflections thereon and (2) Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's The Love Affair of George Vincent Parker

After scrolling through the list of criminals, I decided to choose George Victor Townley because I saw that one of the unofficial works was an interview with him. I immediately found that to be interesting because you get to hear his point of view as to why he committed the crime he did opposed to reading just a published work, where the writer states his or her opinion. I decided to find out a bit more about Townley and it appears he went insane which led to him committing suicide at prison. That sparked my interest even more and I can’t wait to read his interview just to see if he had any sympathy for committing murder.

  15. I will be researching the case of FREDERICK GEORGE MANNING, MARIA MANNING, Killing > murder, 29th October 1849.

    Reference Number: t18491029-1890
    Offence: Killing -murder
Crime: indicted for the wilful murder of Patrick O'Connor.—They were also charged on the Coroner's inquisition with the like murder.

Unofficial Works: “Life of the Mannings” (~1849)
    http://www.bl.uk/collection-items/a-broadside-on-the-execution-of-the-mannings

I decided to choose the Mannings case because it was a wife and husband that had committed the murder. I read a background story on the case also and it seemed that there was several factors that played into this case, regarding maria's feelings towards the victim.
